Senate Filibuster?... Bring It On!

The Oblogger is extremely ticked off right now. Was listening to an explanation of the filibuster on NPR and how it affects the Democrats' attempts to get healthcare passed.

And then it was explained that one reason why Dems and Repubs don't want a filibuster is because it "stops them from doing more important things....like fundraising."

Fundraising? Are you effing kidding me? This is why healthcare is stalled? Because our elected officials need time to fundraise?

So my thought is... let them filibuster. Let it happen. Let it take as long as it takes... one week, two weeks, one month, three months. I really don't give a damn.

Let the whole thing be televised. And let the American people see their Republican senators behaving badly and lying about healthcare reform.

And let the progressive factchecking army sit there with their laptops refuting each and every false statement.

I don't want them traveling to their home state. I don't want them seeing their wife and children. I don't care whether they are Democrats or Republicans. I want them there doing the job we elected them to do.

When a bully threatens you, you can't cave into the threat. And after healthcare passes, in whatever form, when filibuster is threatened again... then let's go to a REAL filibuster one more time. Each and every time let's call them on their threats and make all of them sit their butts in their chairs until they stop threatening.

When adults insist on acting like spoiled children, threatening to stamp their little feet and hold their breath until they pass out. I say GO FOR IT!

UPDATE: Looks like this idea is catching steam.

Alexod: Obama Stimulus and Bank Bailout Necessary

From Bloomberg:

Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Bailouts of the U.S. banking and auto industries and the $787 billion economic stimulus were needed to skirt an economic meltdown even as polls suggest the policies are unpopular, said David Axelrod, a senior White House adviser.

“Some of those policies were ones that nobody wanted to undertake but were essential,” Axelrod said today on ABC’s “This Week” program. “But our responsibility was to make sure the economy didn’t tip into a second Great Depression. I have no regrets about that.”

President Obama: Promises Kept vs. Promises Broken

Politifact keeps a comprehensive list of all of Obama's campaign promises and where he stands on fulfilling them one year into his administration. Obama has had some obvious stumbles, but according to Politifact:

Still, the ratings show Obama — with the help of a Democratic Congress — has made significant progress on much of his agenda. Political experts give him credit for passing a substantial amount during the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

The bad economy may have dimmed public perceptions of his accomplishments, said Thomas Mann, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies the federal government. Obama's approval ratings dropped as 2009 came to an end.

"He's been largely faithful to the promises he made in the campaign, especially substantive policy ones," Mann said. "But the public doesn't see what I see in objective terms. There's distrust about the economy, and they're put off by the partisan bickering in Washington. They're scared and skeptical of government, so there's a gulf between what he's accomplished and how it's viewed."
