What Does the Chief of Staff Do?

Like many of you, I am new to the political process, being brought in by my excitement about Obama's candidacy. And now that I am engaged, I can't believe how little I knew about how our government and presidential campaigns work.

A lot of this is a learning curve. I don't think I'm alone in this regard. The beauty of the Obama campaign is that it made a lot of citizens like myself wake up and take notice.

So much has been written about Obama's choice of Rahm Emanuel as Chief of Staff, but I would bet that there are many people who don't have a clear picture as to what a Chief of Staff does. (I suppose you could say in that regard Sarah Palin IS just like us. Problem is, I don't want someone who is a dumbass like myself in charge!)

Did the Wikipedia search on what the Chief of Staff does, and it seems to me that while there was a lot of brouhaha over who would be the Vice Presidential pick, that the Chief of Staff is the real behind-the-scenes power broker. Emanuel will serve as Obama's "Bad Cop" and gatekeeper, leaving Obama to still be the nice, thoughtful guy we all know and love.

Makes a lot of sense to me.

You mean he's not the head of the cooks and the butlers. Hmm, not the first time that wikipedia is wrong :)
